In contrast to more traditional lab research, where you have users come on-site to test your product or website, remote user research simply means any kind of user research where the research moderator and the participants are in different places. A typical remote research session has the participant on his or her own computer at home, talking to the research moderator over the phone, while using a screensharing program so that the moderator can follow along.
