In the early 1990s, the U.S. Army War College created an acronym to describe the geopolitical situation after the Cold War: VUCA. It stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, four characteristics they saw as defining the multilateral post-Cold War world. The rise of information technologies — and the internet in particular — has radically transformed our political, economic, and social reality. We are all now living in a generalized state of VUCA. We see signs of it everywhere — including the enterprise.

About Jorge Arango
Jorge helps organizations create digital places that make people smarter. He has designed information environments for organizations ranging from developing world NGOs to Fortune 500 corporations. He’s the author of Living in Information: Responsible Design for Digital Places and co-author of Information Architecture for the Web and Beyond, the fourth edition of O’Reilly’s celebrated “polar bear” book. In addition to his design consulting practice, Jorge is also an adjunct professor in the interaction design program at the California College of the Arts.
